Chart a live implied volatility surface from one sentence

Written and reviewed by ConvexValue · Updated July 15, 2026

The IV surface is the weather map of an options market — and in most retail platforms it’s either missing, static, or locked behind the most expensive tier. In cvforge it’s one sentence away, and — more importantly — it’s yours to reshape.

A live IV surface built with cvforge

The one-sentence version

Install cvforge, click + New app, and type:

Show me a 3D implied volatility surface for SPX: strike on one axis, expiry on the other, IV as height. Let me rotate it, and refresh the data every minute.

The agent builds the app against live options chains and you get a rotatable surface from the snapshot’s implied-volatility observations. cvforge does not provide option quotes or NBBO.

Making it useful

A pretty surface is a screensaver. The follow-up prompts are where it becomes a tool:

  • Skew slices — “Add a 2D view: IV by strike for a single expiry I pick from a dropdown.”
  • Term structure — “Add a chart of ATM IV by expiry.”
  • Moneyness instead of strike — “Re-axis the surface by delta or % moneyness so different expiries line up.”
  • Any underlying — “Add a ticker input so I can switch to NDX, AAPL, or anything else.”
  • Change highlighting — “Color points where IV moved more than a point since the last refresh.”

Each of those is a sentence, not an afternoon with a plotting library.

Under the hood (the part you skip)

Normally this project means: find a data vendor, manage an API key, fetch and cache chains, handle expiries and holidays, then fight a 3D charting library. cvforge’s agent does that wiring, and the app runs locally with data injected server-side — no key handling, nothing to deploy.

When a current per-contract valuation is needed, the available field is Massive fair market value (FMV), a proprietary estimate rather than a bid, ask, midpoint, NBBO, last trade, or executable price.

When it’s something you’re proud of, publish it to the gallery so other traders can run it — or browse the gallery first and remix someone else’s vol tool. The free tier covers building and running it; data plans add throughput when you start refreshing aggressively.
